Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)

What is DMI?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic approach designed to improve motor function in children, with neuromuscular or developmental motor impairments. DMI involves using precise exercises and postural control activities that promote strength, coordination, balance, and motor control. The technique is structured to stimulate the central nervous system through dynamic and functional movements, aiming to activate and strengthen motor pathways to improve overall functional abilities. It’s commonly used for children with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and other neurological or genetic disorders affecting movement.

DMI Certification Pathway

DMI Training - Introductory Levels are offered both in-person and virtually.

Level A

  • In the DMI Introductory Level A course, participants learn 35 exercises with variations tailored for children with different motor needs. The course begins with a comprehensive theoretical background covering neuroplasticity and the principles of DMI. Participants also practice dexterity tests to improve their eye-hand coordination. They then learn each exercise, practice with feedback on their technique, and engage in treatment planning. The course includes hands-on practice with demo kids, allowing participants to apply the exercises and receive guidance. By the end, participants are equipped to incorporate DMI exercises into their regular sessions.

Level B

  • After a minimum of three months from Level A, participants can register for Introductory  Level B. At this level, participants are expected to have practiced handling skills and are comfortable with the theory background.
  • During Level B,  participants will learn 30 new exercises with progressions and alternate holds, following the cephalo-caudal developmental sequence. Participants learn and practice each exercise with guidance and feedback. The course also features treatment planning and hands-on practice with demo kids, allowing participants to apply the exercises while receiving suggestions and corrections. By the end of this level, participants will be able to plan and execute a treatment session.

Level C

  • After a minimum of three months from compliting Level B, participants can register for Introductory  Level C.
  • Level C covers over 30 new exercises with progressions and alternate holds. It includes exercises for head control, trunk control, commando crawling, sitting and transitions, crawling, standing transitions from squat, standing, walking, and dynamic balance. After completing the Introductory Levels A-C course, the practitioner will have over 115 exercises in their "toolbox" and will be well equipped to address the gross motor needs of children on their caseload, on a weekly on an intensive schedule.

Dynamic Movement INtervention Courses:

Intermediate A and B - Require a minimum of 12 months of experience after completing Introductory Level C. Both trainings are delivered only in person by the DMI Co-Founders. For more information about eligibility please email info@dmitherapy.com

Each level must be completed in sequence to ensure therapists develop the necessary skills and understanding to effectively use DMI in their practice.

Courses structured details

  • Contact Hours:
  • Each DMI Introductory course spans 15 hours, typically delivered over two full days. The schedule includes two coffee breaks and a lunch break, allowing participants to recharge and network with their peers. We understand that each organization has unique requirements, so we offer flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the host's needs.
  • Whether you prefer weekday sessions or weekend training, we can tailor the course to fit your team's availability. This adaptability ensures that more practitioners can participate, enhancing the learning experience and fostering a collaborative atmosphere. By accommodating different schedules, we aim to make the training as accessible and convenient as possible for all participants, ultimately supporting their professional development and commitment to improving outcomes for the children they serve.

Number of Participants:

  • For local centers in the Brisbane area, a minimum of 4 participants is required to ensure a productive training experience. This allows for dynamic interaction and effective learning among participants. For training sessions held at other locations, the minimum number of participants varies between 5 to 10, depending on travel costs and logistics.
  • Having a larger group help foster a richer learning environment where participants can share insights, collaborate on exercises, and learn from each other's experiences. We strive to accommodate different locations while maintaining a high-quality training experience, ensuring that all participants benefit from the course and engage fully with the material. Your understanding of these participant requirements helps us optimize the training setup and provide the best possible learning experience for everyone involved.

Demo kids:

  • Demo sessions are a crucial component of DMI training, providing participants with hands-on experience that enhances their learning. For virtual training, we offer the opportunity to bring in a demo child, allowing participants to observe and practice techniques in real-time while receiving immediate instructor feedback. This interactive format ensures that therapists can apply what they've learned in a supportive environment.
  • In the case of in-person training, having demo sessions is mandatory, with a minimum of four sessions scheduled throughout the course. These sessions are designed to reinforce the practical application of DMI principles and techniques, enabling participants to work directly with demo children. This hands-on experience not only boosts confidence but also helps therapists refine their skills in handling, facilitating movements, and implementing exercises effectively.
  • Overall, demo sessions serve as an invaluable opportunity for practitioners to integrate theory into practice, learn from real-life scenarios, and enhance their competence in delivering DMI interventions.

Hosting a course:

  • This is a fantastic opportunity to actively engage your therapists by having them participate in the training. Involving your own clients as demo kids not only enriches the learning experience but also allows therapists to receive valuable feedback on their handling techniques and exercise ideas tailored specifically for each child.
  • Additionally, we will promote the training on our social media platforms, highlighting your business to other professionals in the field and reaching out to potential new families. This exposure can enhance your organization's visibility and establish connections with a broader community, ultimately benefiting your practice. Through this collaborative approach, we aim to foster a supportive learning environment while simultaneously promoting your commitment to high-quality care and professional development.

Mentoring

DMI Mentorship : Mentorship sessions are one-hour virtual or in-person appointments with a qualified DMI Therapy instructor designed for practitioners who have completed at least Introductory Level A. These sessions allow practitioners to seek clarification on specific exercises or concepts they may have questions about, allowing for a deeper understanding of DMI techniques.

Additionally, practitioners can use mentorship sessions to discuss and receive guidance on individual patients from their caseload. This could involve brainstorming exercise ideas tailored to the patient's needs, strategizing on treatment plans, or addressing any challenges the practitioner may be facing in their therapy sessions. Overall, these mentorship sessions aim to enhance practitioners' skills, boost their confidence, and ultimately improve the outcomes for the children they work with.
